Mercer County Humane Society

Foster Program

Mercer County Humane started a foster program to help improve an animal's chance of adoption and help ease the overcrowding at the shelter.

A crowded shelter housing a wide variety of animals is not the best environment for the health and well-being of every animal. By fostering a dog or cat, we can get a better sense of their temperment and also work on basic behaviors and house training. Our volunteers who foster animals are a huge part of our mission of finding forever homes for these animals!

Thank you for your interest in our program. Please contact Geri Sipe with any questions not answered here.

Or if you think fostering is right for you please fill out and submit an application.

Some commonly asked questions:

Q: Who can foster an animal for Mercer Co?
A: Anyone over the age of 18 years old

Q: How long is the average time in a foster home?
A: Typically animals spend 3-4 weeks in foster care.

Q: What costs are involved?
A: Mercer Co Humane Society will take care of veterinary care and any vet care must be approved prior to care being given. Any medication will also be provided by the humane society. We ask our foster homes to provide food, toys and safe and loving environment. Kennels may be available for loan.

Q: Can I adopt my foster pet?
A: You can adopt if you want (since the Humane Society goal is to find animals good homes and we'd be crazy to say no), but is it important to remember that for very practical reasons, you just cannot keep every animal (your mother told you this). The adoption fee will need to be paid if you decide to adopt the animal.
